The project "Doctoral Training Course in Humanities and Social Sciences for the Great Lakes Region", aimed to support the establishment and operation of a multidisciplinary doctoral school within the University of Burundi (UB). Strengthen the research and teaching capacities of the UB, and to prepare the academic succession by training new teachers and researchers. The project proposed to develop and implement a doctoral training program within the UB, to support doctoral students in their thesis, notably through doctoral mobility grants, and to encourage and support the development of research links and partnerships in the sub-region.
During the first three years of implementation, the project experienced considerable delays, and the doctoral training and support activities for doctoral students could not be implemented. However, the relevance of the project remained high, as the theme responded to the political and academic priorities of Burundi and proposed to support the UB in the implementation of a crucial aspect of one of its most important reforms.
